Amid all the chatter of a looming “Blue wave,” Republicans just got something to feel pretty good about heading into the midterms: most of President Donald Trump’s policies “remain very popular,” according to the latest Harris-Harvard poll.
The poll found 11 of Trump’s 14 key policies “continue to see majority support,” with the most popular being his push to lower prescription drug prices, which received a thumbs up from 84% of Americans — and interestingly, that is the one policy that is more popular with Democrats (86%) and Independents (84%) than Republican respondents (82%).
Several other Trump policies are hits as well, like his move to ease fuel taxes (77% support) and deport illegal immigrants (76%).
The one issue most popular among Republicans is his call for voter ID, which was supported by 87% of Republican respondents.
But the issue was also supported by a majority of Dems (57%) and independents (74%) as well — reinforcing a report from CNN chief data guru Harry Enten earlier this year that found voter ID was a hit with GOP and Dem voters.
On the other end, Harvard-Harris wrote in its report, “Trump’s least popular policy positions include placing a 15% tariff on imports from all countries (40%), giving immigration officers the power to deny green cards (44%), and eliminating mail-in voting (45%)”
The new poll comes as Trump has been traveling around the nation, holding rallies to boost Republican candidates heading into the midterms.
Trump has been preaching to the MAGA faithful to “pretend” like he’s on the ballot this year, and that appears to be a shrewd move, if voters are thinking about his policies. If they’re just thinking about him… maybe not so much: Harvard-Harris reported Trump has a 39% approval rating.
“One week before the midterms elections and voters are feeling pessimistic about the economy and inflation,” poll co-director Mark Penn said. “A small majority believe Democrats can do a better job and disapprove of Trump’s tariffs and foreign policy.”
The poll was conducted between Oct. 24-26 and based on 2,700 registered voters. Its margin of error was 1.9%.
