In the wake of humiliating midterm election defeats, President Donald Trump wrote a Truth Social post insisting that Israel and the “entire” Middle East would not exist if he hadn’t stopped Iran from having a nuclear weapon.
Tuesday’s elections gave Democrats reason to celebrate across the country. Republicans narrowly held on to win the gubernatorial and Senate races in Florida, but enough congressional seats flipped blue — despite a Trump-backed gerrymandering effort in multiple red states — to turn over majority control of both the U.S. House and Senate. Texas was a remarkable shock for many political observers, with not only Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D) defeating scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) for Senate, but Democrats also sweeping all statewide races, including Texas State Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D) knocking out incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.
The polling numbers for Trump and the Republican candidates on the ballot grew increasingly ugly as his second term progressed. A key contributing factor was Americans’ souring views on the president’s handling of the economy — a topic on which he had previously outpolled Democrats — especially after the start of the war in Iran and its impact on gas prices. Democratic candidates capitalized on this, making affordability issues and a promise to end the Iran war core parts of their campaign messaging.
Nonetheless, Trump was claiming a type of victory Friday in a Truth Social post, writing:
Israel and, in fact, the entire Middle East, WOULD NOT EXIST TODAY if I did not stop Iran from having a Nuclear Weapon. Nobody wants to say that, but everybody knows it’s true! President DONALD J. TRUMP
