The U.S. military carried out an attack on Iran on Monday, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal — the same day President Donald Trump declared victory in the conflict and insisted American forces had not been fighting for months.
The Journal reported Monday evening that the U.S. struck Iran’s Qeshm Island, citing U.S. officials who revealed that Washington has quietly conducted a series of attacks against Iranian targets in recent weeks.
The strikes have gone unannounced, with one official telling the outlet that the administration has sought to avoid giving the impression that it is preparing to restart a full-scale war, and others characterizing the operations as defensive measures to limit Iran’s ability to threaten commercial vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
As the Journal pointed out, Qeshm Island is home to Iranian military infrastructure, including a naval installation and an underground missile facility.
The revelation came after Trump declared the conflict effectively over during remarks at the Lincoln Memorial earlier Monday.
“We had a war with Iran. We won,” Trump said.
“I don’t even know if you call it a war because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months, you know?” he added. “We control the Strait of Hormuz. We control it and strongly control it.”
Trump also suggested Monday that a diplomatic breakthrough was possible, attributing falling oil prices to expectations that another war would be avoided.
“Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!” he wrote on Truth Social.
Also on Monday, the president told Axios that he was “in no rush” to authorize another military offensive, despite reports that his administration was “leaning toward” a major operation following Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The Journal previously reported that U.S. officials have warned Gulf countries to prepare for a brief but intensive military campaign after the election, with administration officials telling the outlet that Trump was still making his decision despite answering “no” Monday when asked whether he was thinking about renewed strikes post-midterms.
U.S. Central Command did not respond to the Journal’s request for comment.
