In a move rivaling Babe Ruth calling his own shot, Abdul El-Sayed predicted his exact margin of victory over Mike Rogers months before a single ballot was cast.
Shortly after 1 a.m. ET, the first call was made projecting El-Sayed’s Senate win. It capped off an enormously successful midterm election night for the Democratic Party, which flipped enough seats to retake both the House and Senate. With Democrats in full control of Congress, President Donald Trump will likely face tremendous pushback trying to enact his agenda for the rest of his term.
It was El-Sayed’s second improbable win of the year after he narrowly defeated Haley Stevens in the August’s Democratic primary. Stevens later became one of the El-Sayed’s biggest opponents in the lead-up to Tuesday’s election, going as far as endorsing Rogers and effectively isolating herself from the Democratic Party.
Before El-Sayed was officially the nominee, he was supremely confident in his ability to beat Rogers and become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history. In May, a post from the X account @ElectionTime_ cited data showing that the Republicans were favored to win the seat once El-Sayed became the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. The post went on to claim that El-Sayed “performs by far the worst against Mike Rogers.”
In response to that post, El-Sayed guaranteed a resounding win over Rogers in November, saying:
Gimme three months and his golf buddies in Florida wouldn’t even vote for him.
I’ll smoke him by 7. Bet on it.
At the time of writing, El-Sayed held a seven-point edge over Rogers with 97 percent of votes reported.
