TV has been especially kind to video games with a number of great adaptations, including Castlevania, Arcane, Fallout, The Last of Us, Devil May Cry, and more. That makes perfect sense, given that games, especially today, are journeys that greatly exceed the 2-3 hour limit of feature films. It’s also worth noting that three of those shows listed there all hail from Netflix, and the streamer isn’t done with bringing video games to life just yet.
Ahead of Netflix’s planned adaptations of major gaming franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Gears of War, the streamer has officially announced that a live-action PUBG series is in development, and it already has a major creative force attached. Donald Glover, who has become TV royalty thanks to Community, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and more, is officially set to star in and direct the PUBG series. He’ll also be co-writing and co-executive producing with his brother and longtime creative partner, Stephen Glover.
What Is ‘PUBG’?
Also known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, PUBG was one of the first and earliest games to popularize the “battle royale” genre alongside the likes of its mega-hit rival, Fortnite. In a similar setup to something like The Hunger Games, PUBG has dozens of players in teams of 1 to 4 as they jump into a massive map, where they must scavenge weapons and gear to take down the competition until one team is left standing. PUBG first launched in 2017, but it remains a popular Fortnite alternative to this day with a dedicated player base. The battle royale genre became especially popular as a whole during the global pandemic when the majority of the population was indoors.
Netflix and Donald Glover’s PUBG series is now in development, but no release date has been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for more gaming updates.
