Patriotism is really important to Republicans. To Democrats, not so much.
That’s according to a new Gallup poll released on Sunday, which found Republicans ranked patriotism as their top value among 12 options, which also included “kindness,” “freedom,” and “integrity.”
Respondents were asked to pick three choices when asked which values “do you think the country most needs today?” — and 46% of Republicans said patriotism, which made it the most common selection.
On the other hand, it was the least important value to Dems, with only 6% saying it was one of their top three picks. “Equality” was the top value for most Democrats, with 44% picking it, followed by “fairness” (34%) and “honesty” (32%).
The second-most important value for Republicans was “responsibility” (41%), while “honesty” grabbed the bronze medal with 38%.
Gallup added:
Overall, perceptions of shared values are largely similar across party, gender and racial/ethnic groups, but they differ by age. Adults aged 65 and older are more likely than those under 65 to view kindness as a shared value, with 33% selecting it, compared with 21% of adults aged 18 to 39 and 22% of those aged 40 to 64. Older adults are also more likely to identify service (39% vs. 26% and 28%, respectively) and patriotism (38% vs. 31% and 29%) as values most Americans share.
The survey was based on 3,199 Americans who responded online between May 12-22 — or about two months before the nation celebrated its 250th birthday. The poll had a margin of error of 2.1%.
Gallup’s poll comes a week after an Associated Press-NORC poll found a large slice of Americans desire a big shakeup heading into the 2026 midterms. That poll found 45% of Republicans are hoping for “substantial change” in the midterms, while 13% said they would like to see a “complete and total upheaval.” By comparison, 47% of Dems want substantial change and 50% are aiming for upheaval.
“Overall, about 4 in 10 voters have a ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ favorable view of the Democrats, while about half view the party unfavorably,” the AP added. “That’s roughly similar to views of the GOP, although about 6 in 10 voters view the Republicans unfavorably.”
