President Donald Trump suggested Monday that a deal with Iran could be on the horizon, pointing to a decline in oil prices as evidence that another round of fighting may be avoided.
“Oil Prices are DROPPING LIKE A ROCK, down almost $10 a Barrel, A RECORD, because people feel that there will not be a War with Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!”
The president’s post came hours after he told Axios in a phone interview that he was “in no rush” to decide whether to launch another military offensive against Iran, despite previously weighing major strikes following Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“One way or the other, we will do something, but there is no rush. We crippled them financially. They have no money, no gasoline, and their people are getting very tired of it,” Trump said to the outlet, adding that negotiations are “going fine” and that “there’s less urgency [on the Iranian side] than you think there would be, but they want to make a deal more than they ever wanted.”
U.S. crude futures plunged 7.4% to settle at $96.46 per barrel on Monday, while Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 7.6% to $104.77, according to CNBC.
Last week, though, CNN reported that Trump was “leaning toward” ordering major strikes against Iran after the midterms. U.S. military forces in the region were reportedly prepared to launch an operation within four days of receiving the president’s authorization.
Meanwhile, Trump declared victory in the conflict during remarks at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday.
“We had a war with Iran. We won,” the president said.
“I don’t even know if you call it a war because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months, you know?” he added. “We control the Strait of Hormuz. We control it and strongly control it.”
