Texas Senate candidate James Talarico (D) has run into a bit of a problem on the campaign trail: Latino men have an “aversion” to him, according to a Saturday report from The New York Times.

The report added most of those same guys seem to love President Donald Trump.

Here’s the main slice from the NYT story:

Mr. Talarico’s allies acknowledge that for him to win, he will need to maximize turnout in Latino-heavy communities. But Democratic Party officials said in interviews that while knocking on doors in both San Antonio and El Paso, they encountered abiding loyalty to Mr. Trump and an aversion to Mr. Talarico, particularly among Latino men.

In downtown Lubbock this week, a long line of the president’s supporters waiting to get into a Trump rally included numerous Latino men, many of them wearing “Make America Great Again” caps.

Saturday’s report comes as Talarico has tried to win over voters by criticizing Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration, among other policies he disagrees with. Talarico said Trump was using ICE as his “secret police force” during a CNN town hall earlier this month, arguing he and other Texans “don’t want masked men in unmarked vehicles coming through and terrorizing our communities.”

Whether Talarico’s criticism of Trump’s anti-illegal immigrant policies will sway enough Latino voters will be worth watching. Trump won 56% of votes from Latino men between the ages of 18-39 in the last election, compared to 42% who voted for then-Vice President Kamala Harris. But more recently, an October Pew poll found 55% of registered Latino voters view their vote in the midterms as a vote against Trump.

CBS reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez found Latino Texans are split on Trump’s handling of immigration in a Saturday report. One woman told him the “community is tired of being under attack” by Trump, while a man named Arturo Salas said he completely supported Trump’s immigration approach.

“Yes! You broke the law. You cannot break the law, brother,” he said when Montoya-Galvez asked if he supported ICE. “You can’t!”

Talarico has a 2-4 point edge on Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in most polls tracked by The Times. Election Day is Tuesday.

Watch above.
