If you ask a Democratic voter who they want to run in the 2028 race, there’s a good chance this is what they’ll tell you: “No clue.”
That’s according to the latest New York Times-Sienna poll, which found 45% of self-identified Dem voters said they “don’t know” who they want to be the ’28 nominee; that’s more than the top four options — ex-Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) — combined.
Here’s the breakdown on how Dem voters responded to the following question: “If the election for the Democratic nominee for president were held today, which candidate would you be most likely to vote for?”
- Harris: 12%
- Newsom: 9%
- Buttigieg: 7%
- AOC: 6%
- Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA): 4%
- Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ): 3%
- Another candidate: 15%
- Don’t know: 45%
The Times ran those figures in a story on Saturday, with the graphic’s headline reading, “Harris, Newsom, or… no Clue.”
Republican voters, on the other hand, were a bit more decisive.
Vice President JD Vance was the top choice, grabbing 33% of the vote, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio came in second place with 23%; President Donald Trump, interestingly, was the third choice with 8% of respondents picking him, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was the fourth option with 3%. A little more than a quarter of Republican respondents — 26% — said they “don’t know” who they want to be the 2028 nominee.
The NYT-Sienna poll comes a month after CNN data guru Harry Enten reported Democratic voters “despise” their party’s leaders.
He said Exhibit A when it comes to the Dem mess is Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) popularity, or lack thereof. After the veteran liberal had a +28 net approval rating in ’18 and a +53 net approval in 2020, that has now crashed to -5 among Dem voters, Enten reported.
“These are no bueno, no good numbers, and this is among Democrats!” he said. “Democrats hate Chuck Schumer.”
Meanwhile, Ossoff has jumped to the top of Kalshi’s 2028 nominee board, with the prediction market giving him a 16% chance to win. And over on Polymarket, AOC is the top pick, with 17% of gamblers thinking she will be the nominee.
The Times-Sienna poll was based on 1,170 self-identified Dem primary voters and conducted between Oct. 12-19.
